What are custom orthotics

A prescription medical device made by podiatrists to help redistribute pressures under your feet, and when used in the right circumstances, it can help reduce pain in your feet. This is a fantastic treatment option to add into your treatment plan to get you back on your feet

How does it work?

Custom orthotics modify loads to reduce tissue stress that is causing pain. It is an effective treatment for people with common musculoskeletal conditions such as plantar heel pain, foot and ankle joint pain. This can be used to reduce high pressure areas causing corns or calluses, and offloading areas at risk of developing foot ulcers in people with diabetes.

Adjustment and fitment of orthotics for comfort

How do I get Custom Foot Orthotics?

If custom orthotics is indicated during our initial assessment and we are happy to have it as part of our treatment plan, a 3D scan of your feet will be taken and a prescription form will be sent off for manufacturing.

The orthotics will arrive within 2 weeks, and during our fitting consultation we make sure that it is seated well in your shoes, and comfortable for your feet

Adjustments may be needed after the fitting consultation, which is why we recommend a review 2 weeks after

Do I need to wear it forever?

In almost every case, our patients can eventually return to their meaningful activity without relying on custom orthotics inside their shoes.

There are, however, occasions where it may be recommended for long term use. Some examples include people with unique foot shapes (previous trauma, or surgery), and chronic or recurrent foot problems that is relieved with the custom orthotics.

Concluding statement

Custom Foot Orthotics is a valuable treatment option to use in conjunction with your treatment plan. These devices are not a life sentence, and most of our clients will eventually graduate from regular use. There are, however, instances where it may be required long term. We recommend speaking with our podiatrist if you are considering Custom Foot Orthotics as part of your treatment.
